Jannik Sinner emulates the feats of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer with a spectacular victory

Jannik Sinner has achieved more impressive statistical feats with his victory over Alex de Minaur at the 2025 Australian Open.

The defending champion dismantled the world number 8 and local Australian favorite 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 with an impressive display on the Rod Laver Arena.

The world number one broke De Minaur six times and saved the only break point he faced, winning 84% of points on his first serve and 81% on his second serve.

Sinner has improved his record against De Minaur to 10-0, having lost just one set in all his meetings with the 25-year-old Australian.

When asked by Jim Courier if he was surprised by how well he played and how quickly the game went, Sinner said, “Yeah, I feel like I felt everything today.

“On days like this, when you break early in each set, it’s a little easier. But he is a very tough competitor, he is an incredible player.

“(To the crowd) I know a lot of guys came for him tonight but thank you so much for being so fair, it was an amazing atmosphere so thank you so much.

Novak Djokovic’s stance on injury-faking allegations clear after John McEnroe conspiracy theory

Carlos Alcaraz receives strong advice from former world number one after Novak Djokovic’s defeat

“You know, now we know each other quite well, we played last year many times and we tried to understand each other’s game and prepare in the best way possible.

“These types of matches can be fast, but they can also change very quickly if I lower the level a little, if he takes advantage of the opportunities, so I am very happy with the performance.”

At the age of 23 years and 159 days, Sinner, who won his first major at last year’s Australian Open, has become the youngest man to reach consecutive semi-finals at Melbourne Park since Rafael Nadal in 2008 and 2009.

The Italian has improved his Australian Open record to a stellar 20-4, tying the record set by Roger Federer and Nadal for the fewest matches needed to reach 20 wins at the event since 2000.

Sinner has also become the second male player in the Open Era after Novak Djokovic to win his first 16 matches against opponents at his home Grand Slam tournament.

The three-time Grand Slam winner was awaiting his semi-final showdown with world number 20 Ben Shelton, against whom he has a 4-1 record.

“We played some very difficult games last year,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “He’s obviously one of the best servers on the tour, left-handed, you know, a different rotation of the ball is coming.

“So I hope I’m ready, I hope I can return as many serves as possible and then try to stay very focused on my game like today, trying to stay aggressive, and then we’ll see.”
